Evaluation

1. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Key conventions to create a music magazine that looks at the same standard of real selling products are; the masthead, brand identity, barcode, splash and price, house style, central image, coverlines, mode of address, streamline, pug, puff, article trailed and headline. The front cover of the magazine must include the masthead, headline, central image, coverlines and splash is usually common. A contents page typically has a masthead, contents of the magazine usually in a list-like format with sub-headings with page numbers identifying the most important pages that are featured, and a few images representing the articles inside. A typical double page spread includes an interview or article of an artist or band. The page a main image which usually takes up at least one page of the two, a large amount of text, a masthead and occasionally secondary images feature as well.

  2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
I have represented mainly older teenagers to young adults who are interested in pop music. I have represented this by the photos and images that are used in my magazine, I feel like I’ve represented them well as I have tried making them more mature, creating an alternative representation of pop magazine which reflects more of an emergent ideology. I’d say I’ve used an equal amount of images and text except for the double page spread where its usual to have more text than image

. 3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Referring back to my Pitch I can see that the magazine I’m making, Bauer media group already produce and run magazines just like mine. However they do look for magazines that have something that’s different to the other magazines they already run and also to have something that is going to stand out on the shelves in stores. And AMPLIFY is different, it’s a mature and grown up turn on the modern pop magazines which is what Bauer are looking for.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
The audience for my magazine are older teenagers to young adults (16-21). I feel the gender is mainly hit towards female however there are male aspects to the magazine as well. I wanted my magazine to be different than all the other pop magazines, and a more grown up/mature approach on the original girly magazine is appropriate for the audience I’m targeting. Their education would be varied, sixth form-college to normal working daily jobs. They would dress like normal teenagers and young adults, shopping at New Look, Topman/Topshop, River Island, H&M. They’d pay for clothes and other expenses with the money they earned from working. The colour scheme throughout my magazine is aimed towards my target audience, colours that would attract both male and female readers. The colours appeal to both genders and aren’t overpowering. I used a variety of fonts that would appeal to my target audience and the style of my magazine. The majority of fonts were Sans Serif (letters without the handle) giving my magazine more of a younger vibe to it as using the serif fonts are more of a posher look.

5. How did you attract/address your audience?
I attracted my target audience by mainly my front cover, using colours, fonts and images that would attract the eye of the readers. I used plain, bold colours that would work with both male and females such as blue, pink/purple. The fonts are bold and appropriate for the ages I’m targeting; some of these fonts are Brittanic Bold, Broadway, Century Gothic, Lucida Sans. The central image on my front cover is the main attraction for my magazine as it’s based on pop music and i wanted to go one up and make a mature pop magazine and I feel the image really promotes that idea, i used a black and white edit on the image as if it was in colour it would be the same as all the other magazines in the pop genre so making it different is unique. The mode of address helps majorly to address my audience as its appropriate for the targeted age range of my magazine and if the mode of address was different it would appeal to a other audiences that wouldn’t be right for my magazine. People would want to buy my magazine as its specific to my audience I’m targeting, the inside information is something that would attract many people to read the articles and the genre and house-style is obvious so people know what they’re getting.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? PowerPoint:- Advantages – it’s easy to use, it can be uploaded to SlideShare and easily viewed as a presentation, can add extra effects. Disadvantages- Long blocks of text can make it feel like an essay. InDesign:- Advantages – can see all pages on one document, great for organisation, easy to insert and place images and text. Disadvantages – Quite confusing to use for the first couple of times. Photoshop:- Advantages – Easy to use to manipulate and edit images, adding filters changing and adding effects are easily added and changed. Disadvantages – With having so many different available manipulations and edits it can be quite overwhelming for the first time. SlideShare:- Advantages – Allows you to turn your PowerPoint presentation into a slideshare making it available to use in Blogger, it’s easy to upload presentations and and document. Disadvantages – you have to fill in a description in order to post presentations this can be quite annoying. Blogger:- Advantages – Simple to use, easy to upload documents, text, images, everything you post is stored in one place and in order of the dates you posted. Disadvantages – It can stop working at inappropriate times which can be frustrating. Microsoft Word:- Advantages – Useful for spell check, rough drafts, easily uploaded and copied into blogger. Disadvantages – Has a slight boring look about it, mainly long blocks of text. Prezi:- Advantages – Makes presentation more interesting, splits up block text into different categories. Disadvantages – A little tricky to use to start off with. By using all these technologies it made the making of the magazine and the analysis a whole lot easier, and has given me experience in using the range of technologies for the future.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
From the preliminary task to the final product I have learnt how to make my work look professional using tools and technologies, addressing the needs and wants of my target audiences age group and interests. I’ve learnt how to make my magazine look aesthetically pleasing by using typography, kerning, editing and manipulating photos, which enabled me to create a professional looking magazine that pleases my target audience. I feel like my inside information fits my audience slightly more than the content of the preliminary task, I included a range of content including fashion ideas and tips, more music interviews, gig dates and releases instead of just including random and useless content that have no link to the magazine.
